Abstract
1431416 Electric connectors MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 29 April 1974 [30 April 1973] 18814/74 Heading H2E A connector, suitable for connecting the terminal wires of a component 54 to insulated wires 57, comprises two mating body portions 42, 43 providing therebetween, when mated, wire-receiving channels 48, 49 and a componentreceiving cavity 50, two resilient contact elements 51, 52 mounted in one body portion so as to engage and interconnect respectively one terminal wire with a wire 57 in the channels by engaging the wires in slots 63 defined by resilient fingers 53 of the elements, and members 65, 66 for retaining the two portions 42, 43 together when mated, wherein at least one of the portions has two projections 55, 56 each positioned adjacent a respective end of the cavity 50 and each has one of the channels 48, 49 across its mating face from one end of the portion to an opening 60 defined between the projections. A twisted pair of wires are separated to form two loops into which the projections 55, 56 are inserted so that each channel 48, 49 receives a different wire of the pair. Grooves 76 also support the loops. Tapered ports 65 are inserted into openings 66 to hold the portions together, with the contact elements fingers 53 guided into slots 62 as they engage the wires; spaced pillars 80 formed as part of the body portion 43 comprise slots 83 for engaging the wires to provide strain relief in co-operation with protrusions 73 and are received in openings 81. Openings 85 provide access to the contact elements while the body portions are mated and spaced edges adjacent the cavity provide a window 87. As an alternative, the wires 57 may be separated into one loop so that the same wire enters both channels 48, 49 and the component 54 is series connected to the one wire and the portion of wire severed is removed from the opening 60. A wire may be positioned in the cavity 50 and spliced to wires in the channels 48, 49.
