Abstract

1431101 Extruding cross-linked thermoplastics WIRSBO BRUKS AB 15 Jan 1974 [29 Jan 1973 6 July 1973] 4346/73 and 32329/73 Heading B5A Polyethylene or polypropylene material containing cross-linking agent, is heated by compression in an enclosed chamber to below the temperature at which cross-linking is initiated, e.g. 150‹ to 170‹ C., for polyethylene, and then by shear to initiate cross-linking, during delivery to and through a tube extrusion die, whereafter the cross-linking is completed prior to cooling. The material is preferably polyethylene including a free-radical cross-linking agent, e.g. cumene or benzoyl peroxide. The extrusion apparatus comprises a die 50 to which the material is alternately delivered from one of a pair of pistons 80, via an outlet port 33 and passage 41, or 42. The outlet ports 33 are each alternately opened and obturated by one of a pair of cylindrical ports 60, of a valve member 61, which is alternately displaced in opposite directions to obturate the port 33 in one cylinder 27 and simultaneously open the port 33 in the other cylinder, by the pressure of material in the other cylinder 27 developed by its piston 80. When the port 33 in one cylinder 27 is closed, and its piston 80 is retracted upstream of an inlet port 34, the material in granule or powder form is injected through the port 34 by one or more strokes of a piston (102), Fig. 3 (not shown), which effects some compression and consequential heating of the material. The compression is continued in the one cylinder by advancement of the piston 80 as the outlet port 33 remains obturated under the pressure of material being injected from the outlet port of the other cylinder 27. Thereafter, the pressure in the other cylinder is relaxed, and the pressure of the material under compression causes the valve to be displaced to discharge residual material from the port 33 of the other cylinder 27, prior to the piston being retracted in the other cylinder simultaneously with closing of its port 33 and opening of the port 33 in the one cylinder to permit delivery of the material therethrough by advance of the piston 80. During delivery to and through the die 50, the material is additionally heated to the temperature at which cross-linking is initiated, by heat from electrical elements 66, and by shear during delivering through the passages 41, 42 and the die 50. A temperature sensing device 64 is provided.
