Abstract

1431033 Preparation of nitriles from m- or pxylene by ammoxidation SUN VENTURES Inc 10 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 43874/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] The invention comprises a process for preparing nitriles from m- and p-xylene by reaction with ammonia in the presence of molecular oxygen and a catalyst for ammoxidation reactions which comprises 1-10% by weight of a vanadium bronze supported on α-alumina; the reaction being carried out at 375-500‹ C., the molar ratios of NH 3 : xylene and of O 2 : xylene being 2À0-3 : 1 and the volume per cent concentration of the reactant feed being 3-10% xylene, 7-20% NH 3 and 10-20% O 2 . Exemplified products are p-toluonitrile, terephthalonitrile and isophthalonitrile, benzonitrile also being produced in trace quantities as a byproduct.
