Abstract

1430954 Solidifying carbon dioxide AIRCO Inc 1 June 1973 [2 June 1972] 26257/73 Heading F4P A pumpable slurry of CO 2 containing 10- 85% by weight of solid in the form of finelydivided particles is formed by venting CO 2 vapour from a reactor vessel 10 containing liquid CO 2 at the triple point, whilst agitating the liquid with paddle 11 to prevent agglomeration of the solid particles formed and to disperse them in the liquid. The process is controlled by regulating the evaporation rate of CO 2 which is measured by warming the vented gas in heat exchanger 17 and passing it through a meter 19. When the process is completed, venting is stopped by closing a valve 18 and opening a valve 20 so that the slurry is transferred under pressure to a receiver 23. In a continuous process, Fig. 3, liquefied CO 2 in a storage vessel 51 is passed through an adsorber 60 and is cooled in heat exchange with the contents of the reactor 54 to prevent solid CO 2 building up on the inner wall of the reactor. The liquid CO 2 is then fed at a controlled rate via valve 66 to the reactor. CO 2 gas is vented via valve 68 and reliquefied, and product slurry is drawn off by a pump 64 and fed to a receiver 73. A filter 63 prevents any oversized particles entering the pump. The solid content of the slurry may be increased in receiver 73 by settlement, the liquid CO 2 being returned to the reactor 54.
