1430919 Beds MEDWIL Ltd 11 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 16283/74 Heading A4J A bed adapted for rhythmic tilting e.g. for hospital use comprises, Fig. 1, a base framework 2; an articulated support shaft which comprises upper and lower members 5, 6 and which supports a mattress-supporting framework 29; means 20-23 for rotating the support shaft 5, 6 relative to the base framework 2; means 25, 37 for tilting the upper shaft member 5 relative to the lower shaft member 6 and means 30-38 inter-connecting the mattress framework 29 and the base framework 2 to prevent relative horizontal rotational movement of the frameworks 2,29. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the shaft portions 5, 6 are articulated at 24. The lower shaft 6 is rotatably borne in the base framework 2 and is driven by an electric motor 23. The mattress framework 29 is rotatably borne on top of the upper shaft at 7 and has a lug 38 which is connected by links 36, 34, 30 to the base framework to prevent the horizontal rotational movement. The means for tilting the shaft portions 5, 6 comprises a threaded bar 25 provided with a handle and carried in an extension 18 of the lower shaft portion 6. The bar 25 engages a threaded nut held by the upper shaft portion 5. In another embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown) the lower shaft portion 40 carries a bar 44 having plates 45, 46 between which is rotatably mounted a further bar 47 carrying the upper shaft portion 50. To tilt the shaft portions, a threaded bar having a hand wheel is borne in the lower bar 44 co-operates with a nut 56 mounted on arms 54 attached to the upper bar 47.
