Abstract

1430807 Photocurable polyester compositions PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 16 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23277/73 Heading C3P Compositions which are curable by actinic light in the presence of oxygen or air comprise (a) an unsaturated polyester derived from an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid, a polyhydric alcohol and optionally another acid component and (b) 10-80%, by weight of the composition, of a condensation product of acrylic or methacrylic acid and a polyglycidyl ether of a polyphenol or polyhydric alcohol. The compositions may additionally contain a photo-sensitizer and a vinyl monomer. In examples the polyester is derived from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and propylene glycol; maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, 1,3-butanediol and trimethylolpropane diallyl ether; or fumaric acid, propylene glycol and diethylene glycol. Exemplified as component (b) is the bis-acrylate obtained from acrylic acid and the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A; the exemplified vinyl monomer is styrene and/or vinyltoluene; and benzoin alkyl ethers are exemplified as photo-sensitizers. Methyl hydroquinone inhibitor is also included in some cases. The compositions are useful for providing protective films or coatings on substrates, e.g. panelling, furniture, paper, cement and cementasbestos products.
