Abstract

1430771 Extruding thermoplastics pipe MARUHACHI KASEI KOGYO KK 17 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 39103/73 Heading B5A An extruded pipe of thermoplastic synthetic resin has a shape simulating bamboo, and a buoyancy in water, obtained by thermoplastic resin plates located at spaced intervals within the tube and dividing its interior into airtight chambers. The plates are inserted during extrusion of a first tubular wall of the tube which is perforated to prevent collapse of the wall during cooling, the perforations being sealed by the extrusion, around the first tube wall, of a further tube wall 82 of the same or different resin, as shown in Fig. 2. The bamboo shape facilitates tying by string, and is enhanced by drawing of the tubular walls away from the extrusion dies and by a first tubular wall of greater thickness, e.g. 2 mm., than the further wall, e.g. of 1 mm. The first tubular wall 26 is extruded from the Fig. 3 apparatus, in which the outer die 27 extends downstream of the inner mandrel 28 over a region in which the plates x are inserted into the extruding wall 26, by displacement through a mandrel passage 29 by means of a reciprocated suction disc 36. The plates x are delivered into the path of the disc 36, by means of a reciprocated rod 33, and from a container 31 at which a heater 32 heats the edges of the plates, which are further heated in the passage 29. The fixing of the plates x within the tube may be enhanced by their size being larger than the inner diameter of the pipe, or by pinching of the pipe by roller pairs 41, 42. The perforating of the pipe wall is effected immediately downstream of the die outlet, by a needle reciprocated by an electromagnet, optionally provided with a spring. The extrusion passage 23, 24, 25 is of progressively decreasing thickness, and material is delivered thereto from an extruder 1, by a pair of passages 22 each extending in opposite directions and being of progressively increasing width. The first tubular wall 26 is cooled in being drawn through the air by pull-off rolls, and delivered to the Fig. 2 extruder die 8 for extrusion of the further wall 82 which is drawn on to the first wall by a vacuum applied at 83, the first wall being sealed at its entry to the die 8 by a seal, or spaced seals 84. The pipe is drawn from the Fig. 2 extruder, and through cooling means, by further rolls.
