Abstract
1438322 Making thermoplastics pipes A G PETZETAKIS 21 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 29552/73 Heading F2P A method of making a large bore pipe from thermoplastic synthetic material, e.g. p.v.c., polyamide or polyolefins such as polyethylene or polypropylene, includes the steps of extruding a hollow element 3 of thermoplastic material, the element 3 having a rectangular outside cross-section and a round inside cross-section, coiling the hollow element 3 at a winding station 1 into windings so as to make the body of a pipe 5 which is rotating about its own axis, introducing a cooling liquid into the hollow element 3 and leading the cooling liquid through at least the first winding, pressing together to effect welding (with the aid of the residual extrusion heat) at side walls of the hollow element 3 and discharging the pipe body 5 thus formed in the axial direction (at the discharge speed V 1 ). As described the hollow element 3 is extruded from an extrusion head 2a and is wound on to a set of winding rollers 6 which are driven synchronously by gearing (not shown). The rollers 6 have a smooth surface at their front ends and a surface with a braking action (e.g. a coating of rubber) at their discharge ends. The speed of rotation of the rollers 6 is arranged so that the pipe is discharged at a speed V 1 . The hollow element 3 is guided on to the rollers 6 by a pressing device consisting of a series of rollers 7 or a pressing finger (not shown) which is arranged to discharge the windings at a speed V 2 which is greater than the discharge speed V 1 . This arrangement presses the windings 13 together and compresses them to ensure a good weld between the windings The residual heat of the extrusion process produces a temperature at the outer surface of the hollow element 3 which is sufficient to ensure welding when the windings are pressed together although additional heat may be supplied by a heater 15. The inner surface fo the hollow element 3 is cooled by a cooling liquid, e.g. water, which is introduced into one or two of the windings by a supply pipe 17 which passes through the extrusion head 2a and which has openings 19 for the cooling liquid distributed over its length. The cooling liquid flows in the direction of the arrows 20, 21. The cooling liquid solidifies the inner surfaces of the hollow element so that it can withstand the axial pressure produced by the pressing device.
