Abstract

1430596 Gas turbine ducted fan engines; mounting fan blades ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 20 June 1973 [6 July 1972] 31570/72 Headings F1C F1J and F1T A multi-bladed fan comprises a rotor having a plurality of fan blades, a plurality of circular root members, and means for mounting at least two of the fan blades on each root member, the mounting means including pivot means whereby the fan blades are capable of pivoting towards and away from each other. The invention is described with reference to the fan assembly of a gas turbine ducted fan engine, the fan rotor comprising a pair of discs 20, 21 which are shaped at their peripheries so as to define a series of circular openings in each of which is mounted a circular root member 11, each root member being provided with two sets of spaced lugs, each set interdigitating with spaced lugs 14 formed on a fan blade 10, a pivot pin 13 passing through the lugs whereby the fan blade is pivotally mounted on the root member. The root member is mounted on the rotor for angular movement about the axis 17 whereby the pitch of the fan blades may be varied so as to provide reverse thrust. A radially inner bearing race 26 is in screwed engagement at 27 with the root member 11 and a radially outer bearing race 25 is in screwed engagement at 29 with the rotor 20, 21, bearings 18 being disposed between the races. A shaft 30 is in splined engagement at 31 with the root member 11 whereby the angular position may be adjusted. The blades have extensions 36 which serve to limit pivotal movement of the blades about the pivot axes 13.
