Abstract

1,062,383. Axial-flow compressors and turbines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1966 [March 3, 1965], No.6960/66. Headings F1C and F1T. Variable-pitch stator blades 24, Fig. 7, of an axial-flow compressor or turbine are journalled at both ends of each blade, the outer journal comprising a disc 45 journalled in a bush 51 in an outer shroud ring 50 while the inner journal comprises a stub shaft (31), Fig. 2 (not shown), journalled in a bush (38) in an inner shroud ring (33), a hook (40) at the inner end of the blade engaging an annular spring (44) to bias the blade inwardly. The ring 45 carries two pins 52, 53 formed with part-spherical heads which snap into respective arcuate, slightly dished slots 60, 62 in a pair of control rings 56, 58. Pins 68, 70, see also Fig. 8 (not shown), on an actuator disc (66) engage the control rings 56, 58 respectively to rotate the control rings in opposite directions about the compressor axis, thereby adjusting the blade pitch. In assembling the vanes 24 to the control rings 56, 58, the control rings are brought together abutting at the plane A-A, with each slot 60, 62 opposite an indentation 61 on the opposite control ring. The blades 24, with their pins 52, 53 initially within the recesses 61, are then turned to snap the pins into the slots 60, 62, and the control rings 56, 58 are then separated to turn the blades to an operative position.
