Abstract

1430554 Germicidal sutures SUTURES INC 22 Aug 1974 37008/74 Heading A5E A method of providing a suture with longlasting germicidal properties comprises providing a suture of a synthetic polymer, treating the suture to provide the polymer with nucleophilic groups, contacting the treated suture with a first aqueous solution of a germicidal salt including a germicidal ion, and further contacting the suture with a second aqueous solution of germicidal salt including a germicidal ion having a change opposite to that of the germicidal ion of the first salt, the ions being capable of reacting to form a highly insoluble germicidal precipitate on and/or in the suture. The nucleophilic groups can be provided by flame treatment, electromagnetic radiation, electron bombardment, surface coatings and graft copolymerisation. The first germicidal salt is preferably a cationic antibiotic e.g. gentamycin and polymixin B while the germicidal anion is preferably an antibiotic such as fumagillin, cephalothin and penicillins.
