Abstract

1430262 Pneumatic tyre manufacture T K SEIBERLING 9 March 1973 [5 Jan 1973] 9144/73 Heading B7C A method of making a pneumatic tyre comprises the steps of: providing for a green tyre on its interior surface a rubber liner having interior and exterior surfaces that are uncured or are cured only to an extent such that the surfaces may still be bonded to uncured rubber surfaces by further curing, a portion intermediate the surfaces of the liner being cured or partially cured to render the liner impervious to hot inflation fluid; placing the green tyre with the liner inside in a mould; and inflating the tyre, by hot fluid under pressure, to cure the tyre and complete the cure of the liner. The invention is said to avoid the necessity for the use of an inflation bladder during curing of the tyre. The liner may be cured or partially cured before or after application to the green tyre. As shown in Fig. 1, an electron radiation device 12 may be used to partially cure the outer layer 6 of a liner applied to a green tyre 5, the liner being subsequently completed by the addition of an inner layer. The intermediate layer of a liner having three layers may incorporate an accelerator to enable only the intermediate layer to be completely cured by, for example, the application of infra-red radiation to the liner. The liner may comprise more than three layers. Fig. 4 shows a green tyre 5 provided with a liner layer 6, positioned in a mould comprising two parts 15, 16. The tyre is cured by supplying steam or hot water through a pipe 19.
