Abstract

1430090 Cap seals for containers HAYWARD PLASTICS Ltd 2 Oct 1973 [3 July 1972] 31040/72 Heading B8T A method of applying cap seals to containers, e.g. bottles, comprises the steps of providing a flattened tube 1 of heat-shrinkable plastics material which is partially severed at regular intervals to define individual cap seal sections, feeding the tube 1 on to a mandrel 13 with which acontaineroap is axially aligned, totally severing the leading cap seal section from the remainder of the tube on the mandrel, feeding that section from the mandrel over the container cap and applying heat to cause the cap seal section to shrink on to the container cap. In carrying out the method, the containers, e.g. bottles, are conveyed intermittently on a belt to bring successive containers into alignment with the mandrel 13. A previously severed leading cap seal section 1 is held by friction on a leading end 14 of the mandrel. The rest of the tube passes downwardly to the mandrel via a flat blade 11, a tube expanding cone 12, and a main mandrel part 13. The operating head, including sleeve gripping jaws 17 and cutters 18 moves down with the mandrel towards the container. The leading end 14 is stopped by the top of the container but the jaws 17 and cutters 18 continue downwardly to position the seal section 1 on the container. The seal section 1 is held on the container by friction. The jaws 17 release a mandrel sleeve 16 which returns under the action of a spring and is then located within the section 3. The operating head now moves upwardly and supporting arms 19 thereof engage the core 12 and move the mandrel upwardly. The jaws 17 clamp the seal section 3 to the sleeve 16 and the cutters 18 operate to sever the seal section 2. The conveyer is advanced to bring the seal section bearing container beneath a vertically reciprocating heater to shrink the section on to the container. The plastics tube 1 is partially severed transversely to leave frangible connections 4. The tube is preferably provided with a pair of longitudinally extending parallel perforations 2 to define a tear-strip 3 for each cap seal to facilitate removal from the container. The tube is preferably of polyvinyl chloride.
