Abstract

The machine has a feeder through which a flat thermoplastics sheath is transported under a predetermined tension. A cutting mechanism is mounted about a hollow mandrel with micro-perforations in its surface and over which the sheath is drawn. The cutting mechanism has components arranged in a vertical line and including a device to separate the plies of the flattened sheath and a cutting assembly. A staged control mechanism maintains the position of the mandrel and also regulates the cutting height and cycle speed. The formed sleeves are ejected from the bottom of the mandrel and then heat shrunk onto items. The machine may be used for preparing shrink wrapping sheaths for e.g. bottles, aerosol containers, flasks or jars. It may be used at high speed with seamless sheathing which is easy to shrink into position.
