Abstract
1429982 Odorizing natural gas SAN DIEGO GAS & ELECTRIC CO and DUAL FUEL SYSTEMS Inc 20 July 1973 34847/73 Heading C5E Natural gas is odorized by (a) forming a mixture of a diluent and an odorant which comprises ethyl mercaptan or methyl mercaptan; (b) providing the natural gas in its liquid state; and (c) introducing the mixture into the liquid natural gas (LNG) in a required amount. The diluent may be liquid propane, methane gas, or may have a freezing point lower than the boiling point of natural gas. The odorant is mixed with sufficient propane substantially to prevent precipitation of odorant after the mixture is introduced into the LNG, e.g. up to 10% by volume ethyl mercaptan. Step (c) may include forcing the mixture from storage into the LNG with gaseous natural gas under pressure. The LNG may be being charged into a vessel during step (c), e.g. the mixture is introduced into the LNG vessel through at least one line and the line is purged with natural gas discharged into the LNG vessel after the purge.
