Abstract

1429980 Cable termination AEG-TELEFUNKEN KABELWERKE AG 5 Sept 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 41868/73 Heading H2E To terminate a superconducting cable, continued as a normal cable or via a bolt, the thermal and electrical terminations are separated. In the upper electrical part, porcelain insulator 2 contains copper conductor bolt 1 or normal cable surrounded in its lower part by high electrical-strength insulator 3, possibly containing field control electrodes. Insulator 3 continues down below mounting plate 10 into the thermal part. The normal conductor 1 is joined to smaller superconducting conductor 5 by known heat exchanger 4, and thermal gradient is maintained by "cold-insulating" annuli 9 fed with different refrigerants via ducts 9<SP>1</SP>, the inner region round the cable being cooled with liquid helium at 4‹ K. Between the insulation 6 of cable 5 and electrical insulator 3 is placed a conically ended insulator 7 comprising layers of paper impregnated with liquid helium. However, liquid helium alone is found to be as good an electrical insulator as paper impregnated with the same. Regions 6<SP>1</SP> between insulators 7 and 3, and between cable 5 and insulator 3, are insulated by liquid helium alone.
