Abstract

1429854 Automatic control of pumps WATERS ASSOCIATES Inc 5 March 1973 [6 March 1972] 10607/73 Heading G3N [Also in Divisions Fl Gl and H2] A liquid chromatography column 158 is supplied by a pump 118 driven by a motor whose speed is controlled in response to a measurement (made at 154) of the pressure of the liquid supplied to the column. The drive speed is increased with increasing pressure so as to keep the mass flow-rate substantially constant. 57 is a manifold and 156 is a "reference means" to which the flow may be partially diverted. The pressure sensor 154 comprises a Bourdon-type tube, shaped as shown, for continuous flow; the straight portion progressively interrupts light from a source falling on a photocell. The pump comprises two positive displacement devices driven via elliptical gears to produce a steady flow (see Division F1). The drive is a stepping motor controlled by a semi-conductor circuit (see Division H2). The pressure signal controls a current limiting circuit in addition to the speed, and shuts the drive off if the pressure exceeds a limit.
