Abstract

1429470 Photo-electric analysis of oil pollution CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 31 May 1973 [7 June 1972 15 Aug 1972] 26651/72 and 38094/72 Heading G1A The amount of a contaminant in a fluid sample is determined by bringing the sample into contact with a tape and then detecting the amount of contaminant on the tape. Various detection methods are suggested, including photo-electrically measuring fluorescence which is excited by ultraviolet or infrared radiation. Other methods use detection of a nuclear, electrical or chemical property, or measurement of the heat of combustion. The tape is stored after the test so that it can be subsequently reanalyzed if required. When applied to measuring the amount of oil pollution in a sea sample the tape is preferably of paper coated with silane and silicon dioxide, though tapes of stainless steel, white P.T.F.E. or Myler (RTM) may be used. This traps oil in preference to water when the sample is sprayed on to the moving tape, Figs. 1-3 (not shown). The measuring may be effected by a vessel at sea, the tape being stored for subsequent checking on shore; a further tape may be interleaved with the measuring tape to absorb the contaminant therefrom. The speed at which the tape runs may be varied in accordance with the measured amount of contaminant, the speed increasing when more contaminant is present. A method of reeling a large quantity of tape on one shaft is proposed for long voyages, as shown in Fig. 4. The tape is preferably marked to indicate the time of the measurement, or the position of the ship.
