Abstract
1429461 Tempering glass sheet SAINTGOBAIN INDUSTRIES 21 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 02713/74 Heading C1M In the tempering of a glass sheet, at least one surface of the heated sheet is placed in contact with or adjacent a cooling member at a lower temperature than that of the glass surface and then the glass sheet is immersed in a liquid bath. As shown in Fig. 1, a heated glass sheet 1 suspended by tongs 2 is placed between cold metal plates 4, 4<SP>1</SP> which are moved by jacks 6, 6<SP>1</SP> closely adjacent the sheet 1, the plates 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are then removed and the slightly cooled sheet 1 lowered into a liquid bath 3. The plates 4, 4<SP>1</SP> may be of copper or steel and are preferably perforated and covered by a glass or silica fibre cloth 5. The plates 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are held in position for a time between a few tenths of a second to several seconds. The liquid bath is preferably an oil of flash point 318‹ C. held at a temperature of 175‹ C. In place of perforated plates 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, metal enclosures (7, 7<SP>1</SP>) may be used through which a cooling fluid is circulated. As shown in Fig. 3, a glass sheet 1 is transported by pairs of rollers 12 through a heating furnace 11 and then through a pair of cooling rollers 10 to fall into a liquid bath 13. The rollers 10 are of silica or alumina frit and may be covered by a jacket of glass or silica fibre cloth. The inclination of the cooling member relative to the sheet may be varied to remove temperature differences across the surface of the sheet.
