1,241,524. Bending and toughening glass sheets. DEUTSCHE TAFELGLAS A.G. DETAG. 12 Jan., 1970 [15 Jan., 1969], No. 1452/70. Heading C1M. A process for bending and toughening glass sheets comprises the steps of heating the glass sheet to a temperature at which it can be bent, bending the sheet, cooling the sheet during or after bending, re-heating the glass sheet for a sufficiently short period of time to ensure that the surfaces only of the sheet are at a temperature required for toughening by chilling while the interior of the sheet is at a substantially lower temperature, and finally toughening the sheet by chilling in a cooling medium such as oil. The sheet may be cooled during bending by maintaining the bending tools at a temperature below the bending temperature and may be further cooled after bending, preferably to room temperature. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a furnace having a first heating station 10 and a second heating station 20 each heated by electrical resistance heaters 28 a bending station 16 located between the heating stations and a chilling station comprising an oil bath 21 downstream of the second heating station. The bending station includes bending tools moved against the sheet by hydraulic actuators 18. The sheet is carried through the furnace by suspension tongs 15 carried by a chain conveyer 11. The chain is driven periodically by an electric motor such that the time spent by the sheet at each station is an integral multiple of the time spent at the second heating station 20.
