Abstract

1428889 Drawing KOBE STEEL Ltd 24 June 1974 [23 June 1973 23 Feb 1974] 27928/74 Heading B3P In an apparatus for drawing steel wire 1 through a die 3, a cooling medium is directed at the rear face b of the die 3 including a back relief portion 3<SP>1</SP> and at the wire 1 emerging from the die 3 so as to avoid strain ageing embrittlement in the drawn wire 1. In one embodiment, cooling water containing corrosion inhibitors is introduced through an inlet 4 into a die holder 2 so as to flow over the outer surface of the die 3, between the rear die face and a guide plato 5 and over the drawn wire 1 before emerging from the end 19 of a pipe 9 surrounding the wire 1. In another embodiment (Fig. 10, not shown) the pipe 9 is provided with a discharge port (23) through which the water is discharged with the aid of compressed air introduced via an inlet (28) into a chamber (29) downstream of the port (23). The compressed air also provides a cushion support for the drum wire 1. Coolant from a separate source may alternatively be introduced into the pipe 9 (Figs. 9 and 11, not shown). In a further embodiment, the die 3, which may have cooling passages (13) (Fig. 6b, not shown) leading from its outer peripheral surface to the back relief portion 3<SP>1</SP>, is held by a guide-plate (15) (Fig. 1, not shown). The plate (15) may alternatively be arranged so as to allow the water to contact the front face of the die 3.
