Abstract

1428811 Vehicle trim strips CUSTOM TRIM PRODUCTS Inc 13 Feb 1973 [20 March 1972] 6934/73 Heading B7B [Also in Divisions B4-B5] An extruded trim strip for attachment to a motor vehicle comprises an unfoamed resilient and impact resistant portion 9, Fig. 2, e.g. of soft polyvinylchloride, and a vibration absorbing cushioning cellular portion 10, e.g. of polyvinylchloride/rubber mixture, which is delivered into bonding contact with the portion 9 upstream of the outlet of the die from which the portions are extruded. The portion 9 is delivered to the die outlet passage 28, Fig. 4, from a passage 25, and the portion 10 is delivered from the outlet of a manifold 30 into the passage 28, in the required juxtaposition with the portion 9, and foams downstream of a constriction 35 in the passage 28. The member time strip is employed as a protective bumper along the sides of a vehicle, Fig. 1 (not shown), to which it is attached by a coating 11 of pressure sensitive adhesive, which may be heat sensitive or setting, and may be applied to the portion 10 emerging from the die and whilst still hot. The adhesive coating 11 is protected by a removable backing strip 14, e.g. of paper, The coating 11 may alternatively be applied to the layer 10 from a release agent coated backing strip 14. The portion 9 may have applied thereto, by a rolling process, decorative strips 15 of polyvinyl fluoride or polyester, or may be decorated by contrasting painted strips or by being formed of complementary stripes and/or colours, or colours contrasting with the portion 10. The surface of portion 9 may have a grain simulating wood, e.g. walnut, or leather, or may be ridged or wrinkled. The unfoamed portion and porous portion may also have the shape of a vehicle door edge protection member. The extrusion may also be of the Fig. 7 configuration. An extrusion of the Fig. 8 section, having unfoamed and foamed portions 37, 10<SP>1</SP>, may have the foamed portion 10<SP>1</SP> absent at spaced intervals along its length, either by interrupting the extrusion thereof, or by removal by cutting, at which intervals the unfoamed portion 37 is folded over and sealed to provide a finished end. Alternatively, the unfoamed portion may extend only horizontally along the Fig. 8 section, e.g. for abutment with an adjacent section.
