Abstract
1428544 Rechargeable solid state cell WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 12 April 1973 [12 April 1972] 17558/73 Heading H1B To extend the cycle life of a rechargeable cell having a silver anode, an electrolyte of RbAg 4 I 5 and a cathode containing iodine, the thickness of the Ag layer transported from the anode during discharge is limited to two micrometres. If the anode comprises a copper substrate supporting a silver layer, this layer may be 1-2 Ám thick. If the anode comprises a body of compressed silver powder, this body must be up to 5 Ám thick for mechanical strength and the anode discharge limitation may be obtained by limitation of the quantity of cathode material or by electrical monitoring. The electrolyte layer may vary in thickness between 5 Ám and 1 mm. The cathode layer may comprise a mixture of RbI 3 and carbon. A succession of anode, electrolyte and cathode layers may be stacked together to form a battery consisting of series connected cells (Fig. 3, not shown); alternatively, the cells may be separated by insulating layers and connected in parallel (Fig. 4, not shown).
