Abstract

1428254 Sewing machines JANOME SEWING MACHINE CO Ltd 9 May 1973 [9 May 1972] 22205/73 Heading DIG A sewing machine comprises a main shaft carrying a rotary member with one or more magnets 22, 24 attached thereto and a housing carrying one or more Hall generators or magneto-resistive elements 3, 21 which are influenced by the magnet or magnets as the shaft rotates so that the position of the shaft and hence the needle position can be detected. As shown in Fig. 15 two magnets and two generators are provided but embodiments are described in which one magnet and two generators or one generator and two magnets are provided. As shown in Fig. 15 the generators are influenced by different poles and due to the characteristics of the generators which produce different voltages depending on the direction of the magnetic field so the needle up or needle down position can be selected. A single magnet may be provided with its poles located diametrically opposite each other on the rotary member. The magnet and/or the generator may be provided with a yoke piece of magnetic material to determine the angular extent of shaft rotation over which detection takes place. The different voltages produced by the generator may be fed to transistors, one for each voltage to be detected and caused to operate a brake when required.
