Abstract
1332642 Machines with permanent magnets PLESSEY CO Ltd 1 Jan 1971 [3 Oct 1969] 48744/69 Heading H2A A motor or generator (e.g. a tachometer generator) comprises an annular permanent magnet 1 presenting a plurality of adjacent pole-pairs on one face to a slotted rotor 3 located between the magnet and a winding 10. As shown, the machine has a planar air gap and the winding 10 is surrounded by an annular steel casing 11 of U-shaped cross-section, the limbs of which are located adjacent inner and outer parts 9, 8 of the rotor on opposite sides of the slots 6. Adjacent webs 7 between the slots are reduced at opposite ends by arcuate slots 12 which form magnetically saturated portions so that the webs in effect form imbricated poles. When the machine operates as a generator adjacent webs are oppositely magnetized by the magnet 1 and the parts 8, 9 of the rotor thus assume opposite polarities which alternate as the rotor rotates. Alternatively when the machine operates as a motor an alternating signal applied to the coil 10 alternately magnetizes the parts 8, 9, and hence adjacent webs, with opposite polarities, the magnetized webs reacting with the poles of magnet 1 to produce rotation of the rotor. The webs may be made asymmetical to assist starting or two rotors may be placed side-byside with one displaced relative to the other by half a slot. According to a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the rotor is cupshaped and the skirt of the cup rotates between the permanent magnet and coil which are positioned coaxially one within the other.
