Abstract

1428132 Moulding battery cases POST OFFICE 20 July 1973 [20 July 1972] 33996/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] An open-topped container for a large-leadacid battery has walls of sandwich structure, the outer layers consisting of plastics material, e.g. acrylonitrile butyl styrene, in sheet form, and the centre layer comprising a rigid cellular liquid-impervious filling, e.g. polyurethane foam, which is injected between the two outer layers. The side walls and bottom of the container are made by forming inner and outer member 2, 5 of U-section by heating and bending sheets of the plastics material. The upper edges of the member 2 are formed with a shelf 3 and lip 4 and the members 2, 5 are cold-welded together along the lips so as to form a U-shaped cavity therebetween. The end walls each consist of inner and outer plastics sheets 6, 8 having their bottom and side edges bent to form flanges 7, 9. The flanges 7 of the inner sheets 6 are coldwelded to the outer surface of the member 2 and the flanges 9 of the outer sheets 8 are similarly secured to the member 5 so as to form a cavity between the sheets 6, 8. Edge caps 11 of moulded plastics material are cold-welded to the upper ends of the sheets 6, 8 to close the cavity. Angle members 12 of plastics material are cold-welded to the corners of the container and edge caps 14 are similarly secured to the lips 4. Strips 13 of heat and acid-resistant material, e.g. glass-reinforced composite material, are cemented to the shelves 3 to provide supports for lugs of the lead battery plates (Fig. 2, not shown). The foam filling 10 is injected to fill the cavities by making an inlet aperture and providing outlet apertures for surplus filling, filling of the cavities being assisted by exothermic reaction in the foam.
