Abstract

1428000 Ferrimagnetic materials LIGNES TELEGRAPHIQUES ET TELEPHONIQUES 27 Feb 1973 [7 March 1972 28 March 1972] 9575/73 Heading C1J A solid magnetic body with a spatially uneven distribution of permeability is manufactured by heating a sintered body of polycrystalline ferrimagnetic material F 1 at a temperature to initiate transformation of the material F, into another ferrimagnetic material F 2 , the free energy of F 2 being higher than F 1 at said temperature which transformation involves passage through a liquid phase having a different chemical composition to that of F 1 , or heating in the presence of an oxide or salt of a foreign metal whereby the foreign metal ions diffuse into F 1 to form F 2 , cooling down to room temperature before the transformation is complete and machining the body such that it still consists of both F 1 and F 2 materials. Examples decribe the heating of an Fe, Y, Gd, Al garnet and a NiFn ferrite involving passage through a liquid phase and the heating of Ni ferrite below the temperature of liquefaction in the presence of CuO, FnO and B 2 O 3 and Y, Gd, Al, Fe garnet again below the liquefaction temperature in the presence of B 2 O 3 . The magnetic body may be used as a substrate for a microwave integrated circuit.
