Abstract
1427824 Making foam glass SAINTGOBAIN INDUSTRIES 8 Oct 1973 [9 Oct 1972] 46934/73 Heading C1M Foam glass is made by heating a base glass containing a gas-producing agent, the agent comprising a mixture of silicon carbide and a tin oxide. Preferably the agent contains not more than 1 molecule of SnO 2 per molecule of silicon carbide. Preferably there is not more than 3% by weight of the agent in the glass, based on the weight of base glass. Not more than 3% by weight, based on the total of glass and agent, of sodium carbonate may also be present. The base glass and agent are preferably heated to above 950‹ C. (preferably to 950-1100‹ C., so that the glass has a viscosity of 10<SP>6</SP>-10<SP>7</SP> poises). The glass may be a crystallizable glass (e.g. a crystallizable glass as disclosed in Specification 1,307,303) which is crystallized directly after foaming by reducing the temperature directly to the crystallization temperature. The glass may be foamed in a stainless-steel mould formed of ribbed plates, the mould being charged with a briquette formed by mixing powdered glass and powdered gas-producing mixture and dry pressing at, e.g. 50 bars pressure.
