Abstract

1427812 Seaming A H McELROY 13 April 1973 17839/73 Heading B5K [Also in Division F2] In apparatus for fusing together molten pipe ends, one of the pipes 56 is held in clamps 42, 44 fixed to a wheeled support frame 10 and the other pipe 58 is held in clamps 48, 50 mounted for sliding movement along rods 52 fixed to the frame 10 by hydraulic power whereby the pipe ends are pressed together. The pipes 56, 58 are of plastics. As shown, the movable clamps 48, 50 are joined by a pair of cylinders 54 which slide along piston members fixed centrally of the rods 52 in response to hydraulic fluid admitted to or exhausted from annular chambers between the cylinders 54 and rods 52. The flow is powered by a hand pump 78 and controlled by a valve 84. A pipe-end trimmer (Fig. 4, not shown) and a heating device (Fig. 5, not shown) are successively placed between fixed and movable clamps 44, 48 on the frame 10, the pipe 58 being manipulated by the movable clamps 48, 50. Finally, when the pipe ends are molten the heating device is removed and the movable clamps are operated to press the pipe ends together for fusion.
