Circulating fluids through materials.-Relates to apparatus for washing, scouring, dyeing, or otherwise treating yarns in skeins, and consists in apparatus wherein the skeins are maintained submerged in the treating-liquid, and are mounted on supports through which the liquid is actively circulated, the supports being mounted on a yarn rack which acts as a conduit for the liquid. A rectangular tub 1 is provided with two conduits 6, 7 having upturned sockets 9, 10 adapted to receive the down-turned ends 38, 39 of a tubular yarn rack 34, guides 35 on which engage between guides 2 in the tub when the rack is lowered on chains engaging eyes 36. A horizontal propeller shaft 11 extends through the conduits 6, 7 and passing through a liquid-tight gear-casing 21, having a cover 22, is driven through bevel gearing from a counter-shaft 24 driven by a main shaft 27 having tight and loose pulleys 30, 31. The shaft 11 carries centrally a paddle-wheel 13, which circulates liquid transversely between partitions 54, propellers 19 in the conduits to drive liquid towards the ends of the tub, and also propellers 15, 16 at the ends of the tub to drive liquid towards the centre. The rack 34 has uozzles 41 at each side in which are removably fitted troughshaped yarn supports 45 to conduct liquid from the conduit to the yarn. Locking-rods 50 mounted between bearings 43 and bearings in removable end caps 46 prevent the skeins from floating off the supports. A removable foraminous floor 52 is spaced above the conduits 6, 7. The liquor in circulation is continuously agitated with sufficient force thoroughly to penetrate the yarn without subjecting it to strain. A steam heating pipe 55 may be provided and also a cover, including leaves 56, hinged to a beam 57 on the rack 34.
