DYEING MACHINE.
Application filed October 15, 1924. Serial No. 743,724.
To all 'whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Palmyra, Burlington County, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Dyeing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in dyeing machines, in which the dye liquor and the material being dyed are circulated by a driven paddle wheel.
One object of the' invention is to improve a dyeing machine of this type so that the circulation of the material will be positive.
A further object of the invention is to design the dyeing machine so that the material will not accumulate in a mass at the bottom of the vat.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a dyeing machine made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views illustrating modifications of the invention.
The dye vat 1 has sides 2; ends 3; abottom section 4 and inclined sections 5. Mounted on the sides of the vat are bearings 6 for a propeller shaft 7, on which is mounted the propeller 8, which has a series of paddles. These paddles extend into the liquor in the vat, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. On the propeller shaft is a sprocket wheel 9 around which passes a drive chain 10 from a small sprocket wheel 11 on a driving shaft 12, mounted in bearings 13, secured to the sides of the vat. On the driving shaft 12 is a belt pulley 14.
In the vat is a horizontal partition 15, which stops short of each end of the vat, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. This partition is located about midway between the top and bottom of the vat to form an upper channel a and a lower channel I).
At one corner, near the bottom of the vat, is a transverse steam pipe 16, which is perforated, as indicated, so as to project steam into the liquor in circulation and heat it to the degree required.
The dye liquor is placed in the vat with the material to be dyed. Power is then applied and the paddles rotate at a given speed. The dye liquor in circulation carries the material in the path indicated by the arrows. l
The partition 15 insures the positive circulation of the material and the liquor in the channel o, as well as in the channel a, thus preventing accumulation of the material inthe bottom of the vat; The partition may be modified without departing from the essential features of the invention.
In Fig. 3, the partition 15a is of a greater depth than the partition illustrated in Fig. 1, and has beveled sides corresponding to the beveled ends 5 of the vat.
In Fig. 4, the invention is illustrated as applied to a vat having a round bottom. In this instance, the lower portion of the partition 15b is curved to correspond with the curve of the bottom of the yvat so that the lower channel will be of substantially the same area throughout.
I claim:
1. The combination in a dyeing machine, of a dye vat having a horizontal partition therein, which stops short of each end of the vat, said partition forming upper and lower channels and end channels free of obstructions; and a paddle wheel located in the upper channel directly above the partition, said paddle wheel circulating the dye liquor and the material being dyed around the partition in the vat. Y
2. The combination in a dyeing machine, of a dye vat having vertical sides and ends and a horizontal bottom; inclined members connecting the bottoln with the ends; a partition in the vat, the upper surface of the partition being horizontal and the lower surface conforming to the shape of the lower portion of the vat; and means for circulating dye liquor and the material being dyed in the vat.
3. The combination in a dyeing machine, of a dye vat; a horizontal partition therein, said partition stopping short of the ends to form upper, lower and end channels; a transverse shaft; a paddle wheel mounted on the shaft, the blades of the paddle ex tending into the dye liquor in the vat; and means for driving the paddle to circulate dye liquor and the material being dyed around, the partition.
Es PATENT OFFICE.
4. The combination in a dyeing machine, of a vat having vertical sides and ends; a bottom for the vat; inclined sections connecting the bottom with the ends; a horizontal 'partition --in the vat stopping-short of each end thereof and dividing the vat into upper, lower and end channels; a perforated steam pipe located in the bottom channel for admitting steam in the vat; a transverse shaft mounted in bearings on the vat; a 10 paddle Wheel mounted on the shaft, the blades of the paddle wheel extending into the dye'liquor; -and means for' driving the paddle Wheel. l
