1427504 Hair cutting device A N SPANEL 7 Jan 1974 [12 March 1973] 00636/74 Heading B4B A hair cutting device comprises a blade carrier 14 which is movable by drive means 14c, 24 on a support 16a for lateral movement in either of two directions toward or away from the apexes 18a, 18b of comb tines 18c forming a cage 18, the cage and blade carrier being mounted for relative longitudinal movement whereby the blade carrier may be exposed so that a blade may be placed thereon, and means 36a, 37, 38 which allows the relative movement only when the blade carrier is in a selected lateral position. The blade carrier 14 is guided during its lateral movement by guideways 16k and 16c formed on the support 16a and integral handle 16, respectively. The movement is effected by a pinion 24 rotatable by a knob 28 and engageable with a rack 14c on the carrier; the knob is locked in its selected position by means of notches thereon engaging with a spring detent 30. The cage 18 is secured to a carrier 20 which slides on guideways 16e, 16f formed on the support 16a. When it is required to change a blade, the knob is rotated until the cutting edges are within the adjacent edge of the support 16a, i.e. the protected or safety position as indicated by the position of an arrow (28a), Fig. 4 (not shown), on the knob; in this position the spring detent engages in deeper notches. In this position, when a button 34, Fig. 1, is depressed, an end portion 36a of a latching element is able to enter a notch (37), Fig. 8 (not shown), formed in a disc 38 which is mounted on a shaft 26 for the knob; in such position a latch member 35 on the element 36 is disengaged from hook-end 20a on the cage carrier 20 thereby allowing the latter to be withdrawn. Upon release of the button the end portion 36a engages between the teeth of the pinion 24 so preventing movement of the carrier as the blade is replaced. In a modification, Figs. 12 to 14 (not shown), the button is located on the opposite side of the handle 16 so that, upon depression, the latching element (40) engages a projection (16d) to cause the end portion 40b and latch member 35 to effect the operations referred to above. In the modification shown in Figs. 17 and 20, the blade carrier 14 is mounted on a member 50 which is longitudinally slidable on the support 16a via an extension 50a connected to a slide button 52 movable in a slot 16m in the handle. In this embodiment, guides 16g, 16h, Fig. 20, for the lateral movement of the carrier prevent the movement of the carrier to the blade-changing position shown in Fig. 20 until the carrier is moved to its mid-lateral position. In a further embodiment, Fig. 22, the carrier support member 60d forms part of a slidable member 60 having a slot 60b therein such that the knob, pinion and shaft 24, 26, 28 can remain stationarily mounted in the handle while the rack separates from the pinion during movement of the carrier to the blade changing position. The device may be made from metal or plastics materials, the blade being of stainless steel.
