1426886 Sliding clasp fasteners AMERICAN CAN CO 5 Oct 1973 [2 Jan 1973] 46522/73 Heading E2S A sliding clasp fastener 10 of the kind comprising a pair of tapes 12, 14 which carry a pair of chains of engageable fastening elements 20, 22, a fixed bottom stop 26 which secures the terminal portions at one end of the chains of fastening elements in the engaged position, and a slider 24 engageable with, and movable longitudinally along, the fastening element chains away from, and toward, the fixed stop to engage and disengage respectively the said elements is characterised in that a selectively-locatable bottom stop 28 is provided which is engageable with the chains of fastening elements at a selected point spaced from the fixed bottom stop 26 for the slider, the bottom stop 28 having a top web 30, 32 and a pair of spaced side flanges 34, 36 which are adapted to engage with the chains of fastening elements. According to the invention also the bottom stop 28 has a transversely extending thread passage 30a, 32a to receive thread 78 for attaching the bottom stop 28 onto the fastening elements at the selected point the thread passage 30a, 32a extending in a direction generally transverse to the longitudinally-extending fastening elements and to the direction of the moyement of the slider 24. As shown in Figs. 1-3, the stop 28 is of general C-shape configuration with a pair of top web portions 30, 32 and a pair of inwardly-inclined flanges 34, 36 which are adapted to be slidably retained on the fastening elements 20, 22 and tape welts 16, 18, Fig. 2, the channels between the top portions 30, 32 and the channels 40, 42 between 34a, 34b and 36a, 36b in the flanges 34, 36 respectively being adapted for fixing by needle 76 and thread 78, at the selected position. A generally similar arrangement, Fig. 4 not shown, differs in that the side flanges (34, 36) extend perpendicularly to the top web portions (30, 32) so that the stop has to be manually placed over the fastening elements at the desired position ready for sewing in place. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 not shown, the stop, Fig. 4 not shown, has inwardly-directed fingers (44, 46) in order to grip the undersides of the welts 16, 18. As shown in Fig. 6 holes 54, 56 are provided in the side flanges 50, 52 of the stop 48 for the passage of sewing thread. After the sliding clasp fastener has been sewn into a garment in a well-known manner as described with reference to Fig. 2 and Figs. 7-9, not shown, the stop 28 is sewn in position just above the lower ends of the stitching lines 68, 70, Figs. 10, 11, which define the lowest point that the slider 24 can be moved in the opening direction.
