Abstract
1426865 Welding by fusion; cutting by fusion BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [15 Feb 1972] 6976/72 Headings B3R and B3V [Also in Division H1] An indexible rotary work-holder for an electron beam welding, cutting or heating apparatus includes stationary extraction plate 2 with passages such as 24, at least one vacuum pump (26), (28), (30), (Fig. 1, not shown), and beam generator 32, rotatable support plate 4 with equiangularly spaced passages such as 22, a plurality of separately constructed vacuum chambers 18 secured to plate 4, means for indexing plate 4 relative to plate 2 so that vacuum chambers successively register with the or each pump and generator 32, at least one opening in a bottom or side wall of each chamber closed by a member 20 such as a hinged door and a vacuum seal between the plates. The seal may be made or enhanced by a thin film of liquid. Plate 4 may be indexed hydraulically pneumatically or by motor 10, pinion 12, and gear 14, and may be supported by anti-friction bearings. Chambers 18 may be eight in number and door 20 may support the workpiece. Cam rail 21 curves outwardly at loading or unloading stations, opening doors by an engaging projection. Inward curving of rail 21 closes the doors. Some or all chambers may have bottom-opening doors, necessitating re-positioning of the cam rail. In Fig. 1, pumps (26), (28) reduce to 10 and 0À1 torr. respectively, pump (30) to a further lower pressure, while last passage 24 allows air introduction. Before indexing to last passage 24, chamber 18 is cooled at an intervening station to inhibit oxygen, nitrogen or other gas effects on admission of air.
