Abstract

407,012. Seaming cans. MALLORY, C. E., Saladillo, Rosario, Santa FÚ, and COMPANIA SWIFT DE LA PLATA SOC. ANON., Buenos Aires, both in Argentine. June 24, 1932, No. 17931. [Class 83 (iv).] A machine for closing cans by seaming in vacuo, in which the sealing mechanism is enclosed within an air-tight chamber arranged to form a tight seal with the stationary and movable parts of the said mechanism, is provided with a rotary turret which receives open filled cans outside the chamber and feeds them into the chamber and, after the cans have been exhausted of air and hermetically closed by seaming in the chamber, moves them out of the chamber to a gravity discharge position. As shown, open filled cans are pushed from a conveyer 1 by a sliding bar 2 and fed into a pocket 3 of a hollow turret 4, the rotary movement of which is controlled by a Geneva movement, by an arm 5. Can tops are fed from a magazine 6 into the tops of the pockets 3 and held therein by springs (not shown). At A inside the chamber 10 the cans are centred by a revolving disc 16 mounted on a movable support 17, pushed up by a block 19 and come in contact with the tops which are then double-seamed thereon by mechanism shown in Fig. 1. The block then recedes and the seamed cans are assisted downward by an intermittentlyacting push rod 22. The cans then continue in their circular path and emerge into the atmosphere at B where, the base plate 21 being cut away at that point, they drop onto a lower receiving plate 23 and are pushed out by an ejector arm 24 passing under the turret. The front of the chamber 10 is in the form of a semi-circular hood and rests on two hollow wall blocks 11 which have curved inner surfaces which conform with the outer face of the turret and form side seals for the pockets 3 ; these blocks are adjustable towards and away from the turret. Resting on the turret 4 and held in place by a tongue-andgroove arrangement so as to be capable of moving very slightly in the vertical direction only is a plate 14. A packing gland 26 and a sealing box 25 form air-tight housing around the turret shaft 27 and the pressure block 19 and its controlling shaft 28. An arcuate strip 18 within the chamber restrains the cans against radial movement. The rear of the chamber is enclosed by a door 20 having an inspection window 31.
