Abstract
1426723 Moulding foam insulation AXSTANE PROPERTIES Ltd 27 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 19538/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A shell and tube heat exchanger, shown as a water chiller 5, has a thermally insulating covering comprising an in situ moulded foamed synthetic resin having a rigid integral skin. The chiller 5 is located within a mould 1, being so spaced from the walls of the mould as to define a void 11. The mould 1 comprises two semicylindrical shell parts 2a, 2b and two end plates 3, 4. The chiller 5 has water inlet and outlet connections 6, 7 projecting through the shell part 2a, refrigerant inlet and outlet tubes 8, 9 projecting through the end plate 4, and supporting feet 10 projecting through the shell part 2b. The mould 1 is mounted on rollers 13 and can be rotated by a handle 14 attached to the end plate 3. A mould release agent is first applied to the internal surface of the mould 1, and the mould 1 is then charged through a filling hole 12 with a foamable synthetic resin composition. After closing the hole 12 with a plug, the mould 1 is rotated so that the composition "wets" the internal mould surface, after which the plug is removed. After the composition has foamed and set, the mould parts are removed. The chiller 5 has a foam layer formed with a rigid, liquid-impermeable non-celiular surface where it has been in contact with the mould. The foamed material which sets in and above the filling hole 12 is cut off and the exposed foam layer is coated with a sealant.
