Abstract

1426689 Azo dyes containing quinone groups FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 19 March 1974 [19 March 1973] 12187/74 Heading C4P [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] An azo dye containing a quinone group in its molecule is obtained by preparing a diazonium salt solution by reacting an aromatic carbocyclic primary amine or a salt thereof containing as a substituent in its ring a hydroquinone residue with a diazotizing agent and an oxidizing agent, and reacting the diazonium salt with an azo coupler. Specified couplers are phenols, aromatic amines, heterocyclic aromatic compounds containing hydroxyl or amino groups and aliphatic or alicyclic activated methylene couplers. Examples are given for the production of such dyes. They are useful as intermediates in the preparation of dye developers by the reduction of the quinone portion of said dyes with a reducing agent such as hydrogen over a catalyst or N,N-dialkylhydroxylamine. Both the azo dye and the dye developers are useful in colour photography.
