Abstract

1426270 Catalyst preparation STAMICARBON BV 15 May 1973 [20 May 1972] 23112/73 Heading B1E Supported catalysts are formed by (i) impregnating preformed inert porous support bodies with an aqueous solution containing ions of a catalytically active metal and a compound which, when the solution is heated, produces ions which form a water-insoluble compound with the metal ions, the aqueous solution beingused in a quantity not greater than the pore volume of the bodies; (ii) introducing the impregnated bodies into a water-immiscible liquid; (iii) heating the liquid to at least a temperature whereby the insoluble metal compound is formed and precipitates onto the support bodies; and (iv) removing water and, if desired, water immiscible liquid from the 'bodies. Specified supports are silica, alumina, kaolinite, silicates, magnesia, magnesium sulphate, barium sulphate, chromium oxide, expanded vermiculite, perlite and porous coals. The water immiscible liquid may be a hydrocarbon or a silicone oil. The insoluble metal compound may be a hydroxide, the hydroxide ions being produced by hydrolysis of organic amines or amides. The Example describes the precipitation of nickel hydroxide on gammaalumina using urea. The nickel hydroxide is then reduced to the metal.
