Abstract

1426077 Calendering and extruding sheet; laminates UNION CARBIDE CORP 23 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 9036/73 Headings B5A and B5N In the lamination of plastics materials by feeding into the nip of calender rolls 12, 14, a stream of flowable plastics material on each side of a web 32, an obstruction 10 is positioned to penetrate the bank upstream of the nip to reduce backflow in the bank, which would impair lamination, and to prevent gas being forced rearwardly out of foam layers. The web 32 is fed through a slot in the obstruction 10 and further webs 36, 38 may be laminated to the outer faces. In Fig. 3 the obstruction 10 is an extruder crosshead die producing two plastic streams. Alternatively (Figs. 6, 7, not shown) the central web is extruded from a third extrusion passage in the same die. In Fig. 5 the streams of plastic material are produced in the outer nips of a four-roll calender. An engraved stripping roll may emboss the laminate. In Example 3, the feeding of web 32 is discontinued to allow production of a laminate of the plastics with webs 36, 38 only. The flowable plastics may be a variety of thermoplastic or thermoset synthetic plastics or cellulosic materials. The webs may be Al foil; paper; plastics film; cellulosic sponge; knitted, woven or non-woven fabric; glass, boron, carbon or asbestos fibres; metal sheet, mesh or netting; the outer webs 36, 38 may also be of wood or cork. The central web may be of foam material. The following materials are laminated in examples: (1) polyethylene-paper, (2) PVC- woven fabric, (3) polyethylene-aluminium foil, (4) polypropylene-glass fibre mat, (5) PVCPVC foam, (6) polyamide-polyamide foam (the polyamide containing glass fibre), and (7) polystyrene-polystyrene foam.
