Abstract

1425837 Injection moulding apparatus GKN SANKEY Ltd and ARO PLASTICS DEVELOPMENT Ltd 3 May 1974 [9 May 1973] 22039/73 Heading B5A The invention relates to apparatus for moulding plastics material about a rigid reinforcement, the-apparatus being of the kind compris. ing projections 21 which are movable between operative positions in which they project into a mould cavity 23 to locate the reinforcement therein and inoperative positions in which they are retracted from the cavity, first means to control transfer of heat through the walls of the cavity, and second means to effect transfer of heat along the projections in a direction opposite to the former transfer. According to the invention the second means comprises a first element 27 arranged to receive energy from an external source and mounted in a fixed position on one mould part, and a second element 25 constituting, or carried by, the projection, the elements 25, 27 being such that transfer of energy can take place from the first element to the second element to heat the projection without any direct physical connection between the elements. As shown in Fig. 2 the projection 21 is slidable in mould part 20 and provided with an internal electric resistance heater 24 connected to the secondary 25 of a transformer whose primary 27 is mounted in a bore 28 in mould part 20. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the projection (11) is heated by an induction winding (18) in a bore (17) in the mould part. In a modification of the Fig. 1 arrangement a heat pipe may be provided within the projection so that one end is heated by the coil (18). The coil (18) may be replaced by an electric resistance coil or a coil through which hot fluid is passed. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the projection (29) contains a heat pipe (30) containing a wick (31). One end of the heat pipe is heated by a coil (33) connected to the secondary (34) of a transformer.
