Abstract

1425762 Olefin-acrylate copolymer dispersions SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 30 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 20500/73 Heading C3P Aqueous dispersions comprise 1 to 300 parts by weight per 100 parts of water of a copolymer of (1) a C 3-20 olefin or cycloolefin, optionally substituted at a position other than a double bonded carbon atom with halogen atoms or cycloaliphatic or aromatic groups, (2) an acrylic ester and (3) 0 to 20 mole per cent of units derived from another ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The copolymer may be derived from propylene, butenes, pentene-1, 2-methyl butene- 1, hexene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, 2-methylpentene-1, octadecene-1, 4-phenylbutene-1, cyclopentene, norbornene-2, vinylcyclobutane or 2-methyl-4-chloropentene-1; methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, octadecyl, tolyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, chloroethyl, vinyl, allyl, crotyl, butenyl, cinnamyl, cyclopentenyl, citronellyl, geranyl, norbornenylmethyl or chlorallyl acrylate; and optionally acryloyl halides, maleic anhydride, acrylic acid; and may have an alternating structure. The dispersion may be prepared by dispersing an inorganic solvent solution of the copolymer in water in the presence of a surface active agent and stripping off the solvent, optionally after adding a defoaming agent. The dispersion may be stabilized by adding a phosphate, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid or salt thereof, thickener or protective colloid; and concentrated by creaming, centrifuging or stripping. Examples describe the preparation of dispersions by dispersing toluene solutions of (1 and 2) isobutylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer, (3) isobutylene/ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, (4) isobutylene/ethyl acrylate/acryloyl chloride copolymer and (5) isobutylene/methyl acrylate/ crotyl acrylate/acryloyl chloride copolymer in water in the presence of sodium laurylbenzene sulphonate, sodium dialkyl sulphosuccinate, polyethylene glycol oleate, triethanolamine oleate or polyoxyethylene lauryl ether and stripping the toluene, the products being stabilized with sodium tetraphosphate, polyvinyl alcohol or sodium polyacrylate.
