Abstract

1338133 Sulphur-curable olefin-acrylic ester polymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970(2)] 23528/71 Heading C3P Sulphur-curable copolymers of olefins and acrylic esters in which at least some of the ester units have unsaturated groups are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a metal halide which is a Lewis acid, e.g. a halide of a metal of Groups IIb, IIIb, IVb, Vb and VIII of the Periodic Table. The olefin may be isobutylene, propylene, ethylene, butene-1, 2 - methyl butene - 1, hexene - 1, butene - 2, 4- methylpentene - 1, 2 - methyl - 4 - phenyl butene-1 and octadocene-1. The acrylic esters may be vinyl, allyl, isobutenyl, 1-butenyl, crotyl, 2-butenyl, cinnamyl, 3-cyclopentenyl, citronellyl, geranyl and 5 - norbornene - 2 - yl methyl acrylates; optionally together with methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl, 2- ethylhexyl, octadecyl, o-tolyl, benzyl and cyclohexyl acrylates. Specified metal halides are aluminium, boron and tin halides and alkyl halides; and zinc halides. Polymerization may be initiated with radical polymerization catalysts, oxygen, organometallic compounds or actinic radiation; and may be effected batchwise or continuously in bulk or in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon liquid. The products may be compounded with conventional fillers and vulcanized with sulphur in the presence of conventional accelerators. Examples describe the copolymerization of isobutylene, ethyl acrylate and (1) crotyl acrylate, (2) citronellyl acrylate, (3)norbornenylmethyl acrylate, (4) cinnamyl acrylate, (6) methallyl acrylate and (7) allyl acrylate with ethyl boron dichloride; of (5) propylene, nbutyl acrylate and crotyl acrylate with benzoyl peroxide and ethyl aluminium sesquichloride; of (8) isobutylene, ethyl acrylate and crotyl acrylate with zinc dichloride and boron triethyl; and of (9) propylene, ethyl acrylate and crotyl acrylate with cadmium dibromide and boron triethyl; the products being vulcanized.
