Abstract

1425627 Radio-active sources COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 10 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 57025/73 Heading G6R A ceramic radio-active source is made by contacting a shaped body of M<SP>1</SP> 3 (AO 4 ) 2 with a solution of MX 2 containing radio-active ions, drying, and heating; in the general formulae A is S, P, As, V, or Mn, M and M<SP>1</SP> are Ca, Sr, Ba, Mg, Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn, or Mn, with which may be included K, Na, La, or Ce, and X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine or hydroxyl, or X 2 is O or CO 3 . An apatite compound of the formula is formed at the surface of the shaped body. For example, pellets of calcium or strontium phosphate may be sintered, impregnated with a solution of radio-active strontium, barium, or calcium chloride, dried, and heated. Only a part of the surface of the pellets may be impregnated with the radio-active solution, and various methods of carrying this out are described. The source emits beta particles and may be used in a thickness gauge or in medical treatment.
