Abstract
1425450 Air separation AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 19 Jan 1973 [21 Jan 1972] 3115/72 Heading F4P In an air separation process having a twostage fractionation column C101, C102, liquid oxygen withdrawn from the sump of the lowpressure stage C102 via line 32 passes downwards a substantial distance (45-50 ft.), to a vaporizer C107, so that the oxygen is vaporized at a pressure substantially above the pressure of the l.p. stage, the oxygen being vaporized by condensing column feed air. Feed air is compressed at K101, cooled at E112, condensed water vapour extracted at C108 and the air fed to reversible heat exchangers E101, E102, the air being fed alternately with waste nitrogen so that remaining water vapour and carbon dioxide are frozen out and then purged. The cooled air is fed to a phase separator C106 where it contacts the air condensed in the oxygen vaporizer C107. The liquid air from C106 is expanded at 4 and fed to the h.p. stage C. 101. The overhead vapour from C106 is split into three portions, one is fed to the vaporizer C107, one is cooled in exchanger E105 and returned, and the third is partly warmed in exchanger E102, and then work expanded at K102 and fed to the h.p. stage C101. Product N 2 gas is withdrawn via line 31, some being fed to the condenser/reboiler E106 and then in liquid form to the l.p. stage C102 via expander valve 2 or to a storage vessel T101. Crude liquid O 2 is withdrawn from the base of h.p. stage C101, cooled at E103, passed through a pair of hydrocarbon adsorbers C103 (only one shown) and expanded through valve 1 into the l.p. stage C102. A further hydrocarbon adsorber C104 is located in line 32. The vaporized O 2 from C107 is warmed in exchangers E105, E102 and E101 and issues as product in line 18 at about 40 p.s.i.a., a small quantity of liquid O 2 being withdrawn from C107, vaporized at E111 and added to the product stream.
