1425390 Benzoyloxy benzoates CIBAGEIGY AG 27 Dec 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 59768/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds having the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are C 3-8 alkyl or C 4-8 cycloalkyl; R<SP>5</SP> is C 1-30 alkyl, C 6-12 aryl, C 7-24 alkaryl or hydrogen, and X is oxygen or sulphur. when R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are different from R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> the compounds of the invention may be prepared by reacting a hindered phenolic acid chloride with an appropriate alkyl substituted benzoate or thiobenzoate at 50‹ to 200‹ C.; and when R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are the same as R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP>, they may be prepared by reacting two moles of a dialkyl substituted hydroxybenzoyl halide with one mole of a base to produce an intermediate (dialkyl - substituted hydroxybenzoyloxy) - dialkyl benzoyl halide and reacting the intermediate with an alcohol or mercaptan or hydrolysing to give the required product. The compounds of the invention may be used to stabilize organic materials subject to oxidative and U.V. light degradation.
