Abstract

1425161 Coated yarn or fabric BONAS BROS LTD 1 Dec 1972 [4 Dec 1971 22 April 1972] 56408/71 and 18781/72 Heading B2E The coefficient of friction of textile yarn or fabric is increased by applying to at least a part of the yarn or fabric an inert non-slump room temperature vulcanising silicone rubber having an elongation of at least three times that of the yarn or fabric, and thereafter vulcanising the rubber. A mixture of the rubber and a self levelling silicone rubber having an elongation of more than 400% and trichlorethane as a lubricant may be applied by extrusion through one or more jets. Preferably the mixture is filtered to remove air bubbles and sheared before application to the yarn. As shown in Fig. 3, tape from bin 48 is led below jets and lines of extruded mixture is formed longitudinally thereon. Take-off roller 54 is directly coupled to the first stage magazine roller 56 and second stage roller 58. The take-off and magazine are driven by a constant speed motor, and feed roller 50 is driven by a d.c. motor controlled by a closed-loop system whioh controls the armature voltage by thyristors. Potentiometer 60 provides the required trim and is actuated by dancing roller 52 so that the fabric is at constant tension. Tension is adjusted by varying counterweight 80 in relation to roller 52. The fabric passes over saddle 64 which can be stationary or made to reciprocate. The mixture from nitrogen pressurised-vessel 74 flows through the filter trap 72, through valve 70 to the jet manifold for extrusion. The size of the bead extruded is controlled by pressure regulator 76. As shown in Fig. 1 the jet manifold comprises a hollow, open-ended housing 10 provided with external threads 12 at each end, a solid insert held in the housing by internally threaded end caps, an inlet port 16 to which a delivery pipe 18 is secured and a plurality of internally threaded outlet ports 20. Jets 22 are engaged in ports 20. The inlet and outlet ports are interconnected by passageways extending through the insert and having a decreasing cross-sectional area. As shown in Fig. 2 the filter trap comprises a hollow chamber 30 having inlet port 32 to which the mixture is delivered, a pipe 34 leading from inlet port 32 to the bottom of screen filter 36, and a mixture outlet port 42. Accumulating gases from the silicone mixture are vented through port 44 at the top of chamber 30.
