Abstract

1425053 Refining fats SOVER SA 1 June 1973 [2 June 1972] 26310/73 Heading C5C Fatty material, e.g. lanoline, dissolved in a first solvent is refined by contacting the solution with a second solvent, allowing to separate into two phases and treating the phase containing the oil with an adsorbent bleaching agent. The second solvent comprises a substance with at least one polar group and an aliphatic chain of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and may be an alcohol, a ketone, a keto-alcohol, a glycol or glycerol; isopropyl alcohol is preferred. In one embodiment a miscella of fatty material dissolved in hexane is mixed with isopropyl alcohol, a mucilage-removing agent, e.g. phosphoric acid, citric acid or an electrolyte, and water. The mixture separates into three layers: mucilage-free miscella, an intermediate layer of mucilage and impurities, and an alcoholic solution. The upper layer is then bleached by percolation through granules of activated carbon, further bleached by an acid solution, e.g. of sodium chlorite, and then neutralized with a solution of, e.g. caustic soda in water, isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. The material is allowed to separate into two layers, the miscella layer is washed with isopropyl alcohol and then distilled under vacuum to separate refined fatty material from solvent. The recovery of solvents and of fatty acids is described.
