1424990 Carbon filaments ASSOCIATION POUR LA RECHERCHE ET LE DEVELOPMENT DES METHODES ET PROCESSUS INDUSTRIELS, SOC NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION and SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 7 June 1974 [15 June 1973] 25463/74 Heading C1A A carbon filament having a diameter of less than 50 Á has a coating of silicon carbide of thickness less than 0À2 Á; a further coating of silicon carbide of thickness greater than 10 Á is preferably deposited on the filament. The preerred form of the filament may be prepared by a process comprising passing a carbon filament, heated by the Joule effect to a temperature of 1200-1420‹ C. (preferably 1350‹ C.), into a first reactor containing gaseous silicon tetrachloride and hydrogen (the silicon tetrachloride preferably being present in a proportion of 30 vol. per cent), the residence time of the filament in the first reactor being less than 30 seconds (preferably about 10 sees.), whereby the thin inner carbide layer is deposited, and then passing the filament, heated to a temperature of at least 1100‹ C. (and preferably 1200‹ C.) into a second reactor (whose walls are preferably heated) containing gaseous compounds which will react in contact with the filament to deposit the thick outer carbide layer thereon. The gaseous compounds in the second reactor preferably comprise methyltrichlorosilane and hydrogen in a molar ratio of 0À34: 1.
