Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a coated layer with excellent sturdiness and abrasion-proof property by adding to the coated layer of a surface-coated tool component 0.005 to 1 atomic % of one or two kinds of fluoride and chloride. CONSTITUTION:In a surface-coated tool component, of which the cotaed layer has a thickness of 5 to 1000 mum and is made of one or two kinds of tungsten and tungsten carbide, the coated layer is added with 0.005 to 1 atomic % of one or two kinds of fluoride and chloride and the diameter of the crystallized particles is made 1 mum or less, and thereby it is given sturdiness and abrasion-proof property. Further, the surface of the tool component is given heat treatment by means of an inert gas containing the following reaction components; (a) one or two kinds of tungsten fluoride and chloride, (b) alcohol, (c) one or two kinds of hydrogen and hydrocarbon, and (d) if needed, oxidizing gas, and thereby the above tool component surface is given a coating. The ratio of the above reaction components to the inert gas is: 1 to 50 volume % of reaction components: 50 to 99 volume % of inert gas.
