Abstract

1424932 Conveying discs on edge LEWALS Inc 19 Nov 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 53678/73 Heading B8A [Also in Division B2] Discs D are advanced on-edge in a columnlike relation from a feed shoot 72 along spaced rotating support rollers 26, 27. The leading disc is sprayed by a paint gun 10 and is discharged to a shoot 96. The discs D may be advanced in the shoot 72 by gravity, or by rotating feed rolls 80, 80. The leading three discs are engaged by a pressure roller 85. This has a flange which holds the leading disc momentarily. When a predetermined degree of back pressure develops in the column, the roller 85 is lifted against the action of a spring 92. The spray gun 10 is operated in response to a signal from a switch 112 operated by a lever 87 on which the roller 85 is mounted. In order to facilitate the discharge of each disc, the roll 27 is longer than the roll 26, by an amount equal to the thickness of one disc. In a modification (Fig. 8), the roller 85 is replaced by a flexible abutment 132. The leading disc is first held by this and is then deflected upwardly (against the spring of the abutment), by the action of a disc 138 carried by an arm 136, periodically reciprocated by an eccentric 144. There may be a third roll 42 (Fig. 2) supporting with the roll 27 a second column of discs. Deflecting mechanisms as in Fig. 8 may be provided (Fig. 10, not shown) for each column with the arms 136 operating in an out of phase relationship, so that the load on the paint supply can be evened out. The actual operation of each spray gun is initiated in each case by a switch 150 (Fig. 8) operated by a lever 142 connected to the arm 136. The feed of paint to the spray gun 10, is controlled by a unit (16) (Fig. 1, not shown). This has a control 106 for adjusting a delay period between the initiation signal (i.e. by switch 112 or 150) and the instant at which the valve of the gun is opened. A knob 108 controls the duration of the spray period. When the discs are discharged, they are fed to a drying oven (24). The feed rolls 26, 27, are mounted so as to be held in a slightly sloping attitude (up or down) by adjusting a knob 63 (Fig. 2).
